Michael Houdek Wine Selections

Mike imports wines that are available only here at the shoppe. Here are some of those wines.
PORTE ROUGE CHATEAUNEUF DU PAPE
FRENCH RED
The classic famous wine of the Rhone. An exclusive here at the shoppe. Drinking great now and will only get better!
TENUTA MONTANELLO BAROLO
ITALIAN RED
OK, so maybe not the most reasonable wine on the list here, but if you are looking for something really special then this is that wine. This is not just Barolo, but Cru Barolo. Meaning it comes from a single vineyard (Montanello) that is deemed spectacular enough to be granted Cru Status. Located in the commune of Castiglione Falleto this 100% Nebbiolo wine is aged for 24 months in oak and then another 3 years in bottle. 40% of this wine comes from vineyards planted in 1943 and 60% that was planted in 1992. Serious Pedigree for a not so crazy price. This wine does not disappoint. There is a reason why Barolo is known as the King of Wines and the Wine of Kings.
TENUTA MONTANELLO BARBERA D'ALBA
ITALIAN RED
What a great find this wine has turned out to be. This Piemonte classic over-delivers at this price point. This is a full-bodied deep colored Barbera jam packed with flavor. Very balanced between the fruit, acidity and tannins. There are many layers to this wine that are so enjoyable-dark fruit, a whisper of coffee, a long finish-attributes that should cost a whole lot more, but don’t. This is a serious dry red with a not so serious price tag. I am a big fan. Let me know what you think: mike@houdeks.com
TENUTA MONTANELLO DOLCETTO D'ALBA

ITALIAN RED
Dolcetto Wines are known for their abundant fruit (especially black cherry and raspberry) tones and lively acidity. They run the gamut from very light wines to dark and powerful. Montanello Dolcetto leans more toward the latter. Medium body and dry with a penetrating nose of fresh raspberry and a hint of licorice. Dark cherry in color, on the palate the wine is fresh and lively with good structure. The wine is not massively complex nor should it be. But it does grab your attention in a very pleasing positive way. The wine has soul and at this price point makes a great buy. Enjoy this with antipasto, pizza or pasta. I find a very slight chill to it makes it even better

TENUTA MONTANELLO BARBERA D'ALBA CROCETTA
ITALIAN RED
Crocetta is the bigger sibling to the regular Barbera D’Alba from Tenuta Montanello. The difference between the two is that the Crocetta sees about six months of oak aging and the regular Barberra is all done in stainless steel. The Crocetta also comes from older vines. This combination makes the Crocetta a bigger, richer, fuller wine. Quite a bit more weight in the mouth and much deeper, darker fruit tones to it. This substantial, full bodied beauty pairs nicely with roasted meats, grilled steaks, chops and pasta with a rich sauce.
TENUTA MONTANELLO LANGHE NEBBIOLO
ITALIAN RED
Another beauty from the fantastic estate of Tenuta Montanello. This 100% Nebbiolo classic comes from the Langhe area of Piemonte where the famed Barolo and Barbaresco come from. This medium to full bodied dry red has no oak aging to it. The color is a beautiful dark cherry. Very pretty nose of cherry and a dash of rose petal. On the palate the wine is fresh and lively with a very elegant finish. All the trademarks of great Nebbiolo. Don’t let the price fool you. This is a very serious wine here. I had a bottle opened for three days and it tasted wonderful. Matches well with pasta of course, but equally great with all roasted meats as well.
